They are both used in everything from music album production to automated dialogue replacement for film.īoth have all the features needed to record and manipulate audio files to your heart's content, which is why in the increasingly crowded market for DAWs, these two programs are the ones most often going head-to-head when audiophiles are choosing which platform to land on. digidesign hasn't given us serious midi editing in eight years, I have no reason to think that this will change anytime soon.Īnother advantage to using only Logic: they make a number of KILLER soft-synths, which only work within the Logic environment.Avid Pro Tools and Logic Pro X are both DAWs that are used for recording, producing, and mixing audio projects. I don't like it nearly as much as Protools, but I have no choice. SO, I am now trying to get used to using Logic for both audio and midi. I can't use the Digi midi interface, because then my timing would be loose when working in Logic. It would have been great if Digi decided to support the Emagic AMT protocol, but they chose their own proprietary method instead.
If I import that smf into protools, the Protools software doesn't communicate with my AMT-8's, so timing becomes much looser. the AMT time-stamping makes my groove rock-solid. I use Logic for midi in conjunction with a pair of AMT-8's. Logic takes MASSIVE time to learn, no joke, and I miss some of SVP's simplicity, but what will you do when OSX becomes the norm (and that will be soon) ?Īs for switching back and forth: I used to do that also, but I no longer do because of the hardware-software time-stamping: SVP? I still love it, but switched to Logic. My ECHO AUDIO Mona Laptop 24 bit audio interface gets ADAT digital sync for digital audio purposes, via the lightpipe.Īnyway, you push play on PT and everything goes!
The MTC comes from the Motu AV to my Fastlane USB midi interface on the PC laptop. Right now, since I put everything on a rockin' Laptop, I have to use MTC to lock Logic etc. I used to have a PC Tower set up with a DAKOTA/MONTANA card, which received ADAT sync and made it lock sample accurate. At this point there are two ways to go, the best I think is using the ADAT sync out on the MOTU (same plug as usually goes to an ADAT or BRC) and that plugs into your ADAT sync on the Audio Card of your PC rig. How do you set this up ?ProTools sends SMPTE out of the USD (or the Sync I/O) to the MOTU AV Midi Interface. Rtc studio quote: ProTools drives everything via SMPTE and ADAT Digital sync On the PC system, I have a wireless Logitech keyboard and mouse that slide underneath my KX88 Midi Controller.
On the Mac system, the computer keyboard and Kensington trackball slide underneath my HUI. I was joking about that "having to turn 60 degrees" thing. My neck doesn't feel a thing, I swivel my whole body in my Aeron chair. It actually helps me put the right hat on mentally (producer/engineer or composer/arranger). The other station is dedicated to composing/arranging/sweetening. I do a LOT of mixing, on my own projects and other people's projects, so I need a station that is dedicated to mixing and recording. I'd love to see the pics, but this was a conscious decision on my part. Rcs I'll post a pic of my setup - I got a belkin switcher which lets me use a single PC keyboard and mouse to control both my mac and PC and also switch monitors - I leave my keyboard controller in front of me works like a charm - hatded when I hade the keyboard to the side - its not natural to work in that way - My neck has been thanking me for it ever since.
I wish MORE software manufacturers were THIS good at cross platform versions of their products. See if you can try them both out at your local store before you buy, but so far I find no problem going back and forth.
The files are completely interchangeable, and the look and feel is fairly identical, except that the Mac version has window specific menus, whereas all the Windows menus are all at the top.īoth platforms support Rewire, so I have Reason and Recycle on both computers as well. I actually took both the Mac and PC (which is also a Laptop) to Ireland and did 5 days of overdubbing on a project. I have used Logic on both computers to do MIDI and record audio. I have Logic 5 on my Titanium Powerbook G4/500. Any info is much appreciated.Īs far as I can tell, they are identical. I'm mainly concerned with midi timing between the platforms. Any drawbacks to running on the PC compared to the Mac? Looked esentially identical at the Emagic booth at NAMM. How do you like Logic on the PC? This is something I've considered but haven't done yet.
